Obituary for Claude M. Powell
West Peoria- Claude M. “Sonny” Powell, age 86, of West Peoria passed away March 20, 2016 at Heddington Oaks after a short battle with brain cancer.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice A. (Green) Powell; son, Douglas (Rachel) Powell, of Springfield, IL, son Tony (Kimberly Bushman) Powell, of Peoria, and three grandchildren; Jessica Powell, Gabriel Powell, and Tanner Powell.
He was born Oct 7, 1929 in Newcastle, IN to Jack and Alice (Davison)Conner. He moved to Peoria at a young age after his mother divorced and was raised by his mother and stepfather, Marion Powell. Sonny grew up in South Peoria, hung around Proctor Center, and graduated from Manual High School in 1947. In 1950 he was drafted in the army, received combat engineer training, and later spent a year on the front lines of the Korean War with the 25th Infantry Division. After returning from Korea, he served as a recruit trainer at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.
He retired in 1991 from Caterpillar after 43 years as a clerk. Sonny loved being active and healthy outside and being around his family. He had a passion for watching college basketball, Notre Dame football, and golf on TV, while imbibing in frosty beverages with family and friends. To keep healthy in his retirement years he ran almost every day on the streets of West Peoria. He was a devout Catholic and member of Sacred Heart Church.
Cremation rights will be accorded and memorial mass will be offered in his name at Sacred Heart and a private gathering will be held for the family at a later date.
