Obituary for Marilyn Hessling

CANTON-Marilyn Hessling, 78, of Heartland Care Center in Canton, died there at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010. She was born on March 21, 1932, in Peoria, the third of nine children, to George and Eva Hibser Hessling. She attended St. Bernard Grade School and the Academy of Our Lady, graduating in 1950. She was employed by Caterpillar, Inc. for two years, before entering the religious order of Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. After earning her BA degree from Edgewood College of the Sacred Heart in Madison, WI, she taught elementary grades in schools of Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, eventually leaving the religious order in 1969. She then continued serving as an elementary school teacher and coordinator of the Learning Center in suburban Chicago at Michael Collins Public School in Schaumberg-Hoffman Estates, IL. As a teacher, Marilyn had a great interest in helping her students develop skills for life-long learning. Through her tenure in the learning center, she introduced interesting speakers and opened her students to the beauty of nature and the wonders of our world, which she often captured through the lens of her camera to share with everyone. Because of her keen interest in the students, she often stayed in touch with them as they moved on to higher levels of learning. Marilyn retired from teaching in June 1997 and moved back to Peoria in April of 2007. Marilyn’s parents, her sisters, Theresa and Christine Wood, and a brother, George, all preceded her in death. She is survived by five siblings, Dolores Hessling of Metamora, Bernita Hessling, OP of Sinsinawa, WI, Charles Hessling (Peggy) of Washington, IL, J. David Hessling (Sue) of St. Louis, MO, and Rita Turman (Claude) of Ellisville, IL. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins of the Hessling and Hibser families. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2010 at St. Bernard Catholic Church with Rev. Christopher Layden officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday at the church with a Prayer Service at 5:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
