Obituary for Minnie Marie Pabst-Mertes-Sniff-Mertens

Germantown Hills- Minnie Marie Pabst-Mertes-Sniff-Mertens, age 94, of Germantown Hills, passed away at 8:55 PM, Thursday November 13, 2014 at Heartland of Peoria of aspiration pneumonia, her son holding fast to her hand. She was born May 20, 1920 in Albia, IA, the only child of Clarence and Irene (Ford) Pabst. Under the name “Pat Cummings,” Minnie danced professionally during the 1930’s, tap-dancing at various venues, including the Mohawk Club in Peoria. She wanted to go to New York City to become one of the famed dancing Rockettes, but her mother preferred she stay home. In 1937 she married John "Jack" L. Mertes and later Leonard L. Sniff. After those two mistakes she wed the love of her life, Alvin P. Mertens of Creve Coeur. He died in 1958. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a step-daughter, Martha (Marty) K. Mertens-Raush. She is survived by her son John "Jack" Mertes of Peoria. Minnie was a graduate of Peoria High School (where she was once sent to the principal’s office for curling her eyelashes in class), and worked as an operator at Illinois Bell, as a bookkeeper at Century Metalcraft and Washington Furniture and at Peoria Cartage and DeHarter Paper. She was a vivacious, beautiful, fashionable and very feminine woman, short and sweet, and was known for her humor. She loved her son (she said he made her laugh), dancing, watching TV, red lipstick, perfume, the song “Frenesi,” and eating out on Sundays with her son at Capponi’s, the Duck Inn and other places (always taking home the leftovers). She was the inspiration for the leading character of Marie in her son’s E-book, “River’s Bend.” “Dancing With the Stars” was one of her favorite TV shows; now she is dancing in the stars with a dance card sure to be full. Save a dance for me, Mommy… Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at Wright and Salmon Mortuary. Rev. Stephen Barch will officiate. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Peoria. Friends may sign online guest book or send private condolences by logging on to Funeral arrangements have been made under the direction and care of Wright and Salmon Mortuary.
