Obituary for Albert James Woods

PEORIA-Albert James Woods, 97, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina last week. He was born to James A. Woods and Sara Smith Woods in Chery Township, South Dakota on May 14, 1911 and grew up in Bradford, Illinois. He married Miss Mary Josephine Johnston on September 3, 1936 in Peoria, Illinois and the couple remained married until her death in 1991. They made their home in Peoria and had two daughters, Mary Anne Woods Apperson and Nancy Jane Woods, both of whom also preceded Mr. Woods in death. He was a founding member of St. Philomena Catholic Church of Peoria. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to managing the family farms, he retired from Caterpillar Tractor in 1973 after more than 35 years of service to the company, where his duties as Auditor prompted travel to locations such as Australia, Japan and Argentina. Upon his retirement, Albert and Mary Josephine relocated to Venice, Florida. He later married Jean M. Miller Partee on September 9, 1995 in Ft. Wayne, IN. He is survived by his wife of Ft. Wayne, IN. Mr. Woods is also survived by the family of his daughter, Mary Anne Woods Apperson, formerly of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina: a grandson, Michael Apperson, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and great-grandchildren Bryan and Emily Apperson; granddaughter, Julie Pegram of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and great-grandchildren Kayla, Matthew and Kelly Grace Pegram; granddaughter Karen Wiggers also of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and great-granddaughter Jenna Wiggers. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 18, 2008 at 10 o’clock a.m. at St. Philomena’s Catholic Church, 3300 N. Twelve Oaks Dr., Peoria. Rev. Donald Henderson will officiate. The family will receive visitors before the service at 9:30 a.m., also at St. Philomena’s. The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held at Resurrection Cemetery and Mausoleum, Peoria.
