Obituary for Violet Gura

GURA, Violet E. (Hunt), 100, of Sun City Center, FL passed away on November 18, 2012. Mrs. Gura was born March 24, 1912 in Middlesex, England, the only daughter of the late James and Clara (Walsh) Hunt. She was preceded in death by John, her husband of 66 years, and three brothers; Bert, Ronald and Rupert Hunt. Mrs. Gura came to the United States in 1912 when she was six months old. Her family settled in Batavia, IL, where she graduated from Batavia High School in 1929. After earning her teaching certificate from Northern Illinois State Teachers College in 1931, she began her teaching career in Streator, IL. At age 50, she received her bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in 1962. She taught elementary and middle school social studies in both Peoria and Bartonville School Districts until retiring in 1974. Her love of teaching inspired her, at age 94, to become a certified LifeBio 101 instructor, and she was instrumental in starting the Sun City Center, FL LifeBio program. In 2009, at age 97, Vi was recognized with the Outstanding Volunteer Award. Vi married John T. Gura on September 5, 1936, in Batavia, IL. Vi and John raised three sons in Peoria, IL, where they lived for 55 years. They owned The Zipper Market at the corner of Main and Bourland from 1943-1957. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher and friend, Vi enjoyed cooking for her family, reading, teaching, and traveling. She celebrated her 100th birthday this year and she was pleased to hear from many of her former students for her birthday. She is survived by three sons; John T. (Kathleen) Gura, of Redlands, CA, Daniel T. (Barbara) Gura, of Valrico, FL, Timothy J. (Greg Christensen) Gura, of Fearrington, NC; seven grandchildren; Jeffrey (Renee) Gura, Chris (Michelle) Gura, Michael (Katie) Miley, John Gura, Mary Gura, Julie (Daniel) Collins, Daniel (Shelley) Gura and 10 great-grandchildren; Taylor, Brooke, Christopher, Clark, Katrina, Glenn, Shannon, Margaret, Conner and Cooper. Visitation will be held at Wright & Salmon Mortuary on Friday, November 30, 2012 from 4pm to 6pm. A committal service will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 11:30am with Rev. Donald Henderson officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00am to 11:30am at the Mausoleum. Mass of Christian Burial was held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Sun City Center, FL.
