Jamel N. “Sonny” Bourazak, age 89, passed away at home in his sleep on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was born on May 25, 1933, in Peoria to Nicholas and Esther (George) Bourazak. He married the love of his life, Joyce Coleman, on Sept. 15, 1960, in Westmont, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Beverly Zosky. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and 4 children including Lee (Judy) Graves, Jim (Edy) Bourazak, Jamie (Mark Dixon) Alexander, and Lisa (Jessica German) Bourazak; 5 grandchildren including Austen Wood, Cody (Katy) Alexander, Whitney Lott, Nicholas (Hayley) Bourazak, and Tyler (Kristina Anderson) Alexander; and four great grandchildren.
Jamel lived an exemplary life loved by his family and all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, a successful business owner of Eagle Cleaners, and a Marine proudly serving his country in the Korean War. Jamel lead by example as a servant leader to many and was always willing to support, teach, and love those around him. Part of his teaching and support included being a volunteer coach for his daughter’s softball team. His family came first in his heart, but he also loved the relationships he built with his customers through his business and the sportsmen he hunted, fished, and played sports with.
Besides his love of sports, he was an avid waterfowl hunter and true conservationist. Jamel served as the President of Tri-County Ducks and Geese Forever as well as being on the committee and a contributor of Ducks Unlimited. While serving in these positions, he fundraised to provide goose and duck nesting habitats for the local tri-county Peoria area in Illinois. Giving back to nature was important, and Jamel also gave back to his community through his faithful contributions to St. Jude, which his sons have continued in that loving spirit.
Jamel kept in touch with his Woodruff High School class and loved his monthly lunches with them. He joked he would be valedictorian someday. He was certainly valedictorian in our hearts.
He instilled the values of honesty, integrity, giving back to your community, and being a person of your word into his family. Jamel was well known throughout the Peoria area from his business to the organizations he volunteered and served, all of which he loved. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who were blessed to have known him.
