Loretta Irene McBroom, 97 years old, of Peoria, IL formerly of Derry, PA passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at the OSF Richard L Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL, with her family by her side. She was a resident of Heartis Village in Peoria.
Loretta was born April 13, 1925 in Latrobe, PA, daughter of Gust and Irene (Shrum) Stemmler. Loretta and James T McBroom married in 1949. Jim proceeded her in death on April 17, 2003. Surviving are her children, J Clifford and (Susan) McBroom Laughlintown, PA, Mary and (Mark) Markovich Peoria, IL, Pat and (Gail) McBroom Greensburg,PA and The Villages FL, Leonard and (Heidi) McBroom Denver, CO, Greg and (Connie) McBroom Derry, PA, fifteen grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister Jane and (Ralph) Dornauer Irwin, PA and brother Wilbur, Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leroy and sister Martha Belle McBroom.
Loretta was a long-time parishioner of St Joseph’s Parish in Derry, PA and St Vincent’s Basilica in Latrobe, PA. Loretta was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and grandmother who always had a positive and cheerful attitude.
Loretta and Jim were successful and admired business owners in Derry and Latrobe, owning McBroom Feed and Supply, McBroom Farm and Garden Center, Garden of Treasures, and the McBroom Ridgeview Turkey Farm
Loretta won numerous retail marketing awards and was featured in several industry periodicals. Loretta was well known for her beautiful spring flowers at the McBroom Garden Center, which brought customers from near and far. She and Jim’s retail award achievements earned them worldwide trips to China, Europe, Australia, South America and the Middle East including the Holy Lands. As a couple they enjoyed their association with St Vincent College and traveled on alumni excursions with their St Vincent friends. Well into her 80’s, Loretta continued to stay busy and enjoyed volunteering at the Greensburg Art Museum.
Loretta was a gracious and an enthusiastic hostess whose parties were always fun whether they were at her farm in Derry or at her home in Wimmerton. Loretta’s joyful outlook earned her the nickname “Sweet Loretta.” Loretta’s bright smile will be missed by her family and the many friends who came to love her throughout her well lived 97 years.
Visitation for Loretta will be at Lopatich -Brinker Funeral Home 601 Weldon St, Latrobe, PA on Friday, November 11, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 with a funeral Mass at 10am on Saturday, November12, 2022 at St Vincent’s Basilica, Latrobe PA. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Derry, PA.
