Obituary for Joseph P. Maier

Germantown Hills- Joseph P. Maier, age 71, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at UnityPoint Methodist in Peoria.  

Joe was born on August 8, 1949 in Evergreen Park, IL, a son of Robert E. and Jean (Hartwick) Maier.  He married Carol Siders on December 26, 1970 in Bement, IL.  She survives.  Also surviving are one son Britton (Ann) Maier of Mason, OH and their children Elizabeth, Katherine and Abigail and one sister Susan (Boyd) Roberts of Winfield, IL,  as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Michael Maier.  

Joe was a 1967 graduate of Richwoods High School.  As class president he organized class reunions and class gifts to the American Cancer Society.  Joe attended the University of Illinois from 1967-1972 graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in English.   As a proud Illini, he was a walk-on basketball player and a member of FarmHouse Fraternity.  His affiliation continued as an active member of Varsity I and an I Fund contributor.  He received his Master’s degree in English in 1976 at Illinois State University.

Joe returned to Richwoods High School to become a beloved English teacher and coach for over 30 years. He was a successful and respected head coach of Women’s Track and Field from 1976-2005, an Illinois Track and Cross Country Association Coach of the Year 1991, 92, and 93, and an inductee to the ITCCA Coaches Hall of Fame.

Joe was a beloved husband, father, Papa, brother, and friend.  He loved traveling and hiking with his family.  His generosity, faith, and love of life have touched all who knew him.  This is his legacy.

A private family mass will be held with Msgr. Jason Gray officiating at St. Thomas Catholic Church.  Cremation Rites have been accorded.  Burial of Ashes will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Illinois Cancer Care Center or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
