Soon after, she moved to Peoria and became the Nursing Services Director for the Peoria County Chapter of the Red Cross in January of 1949. Jenny was a dedicated employee and received many awards and commendations for her work over the years, most memorably for her role as Nurse Manager on the rescue ship of the injured and ill in the liberation on Christmas Eve, 1962, of prisoners held captive in Cuba and their journey to freedom.
In 1951, Jenny married Dale McCammon at her beloved St. Mary’s Cathedral that she joined when she arrived in Peoria and worked tirelessly on committees and boards over 60 plus years. She was an accomplished piano player and loved singing in the Cathedral Choir. In her later years…Jenny took on the role of Lector and took great pride in proclaiming the Word of God!
In 1963, Jenny was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for key women educators. Ever an eager student, Jenny completed her Bachelors of Science degree from Bradley University in 1968, followed closely by her Master of Art’s in 1972.
After leaving the Red Cross in October of 1967, she joined the faculty of Illinois Central College, and spent the next 20 years educating the young people she loved working with. Soon after becoming certified by the American College of Surgeons, Chicago Committee on Trauma, in advanced Emergency Aid and Transportation of the critically ill and injured in 1970…Jenny embraced the chance to found and teach the Emergency Training Program with Dr. Bill Hart.
Always looking to give service…Jenny became a member of the Pilot Club of Peoria and in 1980, was inducted into the National Honor Society of Nursing at Bradley University, Sigma Theta Tau, as a charter member of the Epsilon Epsilon Chapter.
In 1988, Jenny became a charter member of the Ephphetha Ecumenical Choir of the Diocese of Peoria. She served as a board member and sang with the choir for many concerts, including Carnegie Hall and the White House. Jen also traveled on several international choir tours, the most memorable, to sing for the now, Pope Saint John Paul II.
The ecumenical choir evolved into the St. Anthony Camerata Chorale Festival Choir and Jenny’s bucket list trip to Rome to sing for Pope Francis was realized in the Papal Mass of Epiphany in January of 2016. Music was such an important part of Jenny’s life and the choir and travelers were enchanted by her joy and delight in it!
Jenny and her beloved, Bill, were the kindest, most giving, loving couple you would ever want to meet and be part of their aura together. Jeanette Ann McCammon Hoffman Hart…Sweet Wife, Sister, Aunt Jen, Stepmom, Beloved Friend, Fellow Choir Member, Parishioner, Benefactor, Educator, Amazing Neighbor…the Angels were surely dancing when you arrived to meet your Lord!
