Obituary for Joel P. Ferguson
Peoria-Joel Patrick Ferguson, 44, of Peoria, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017.
Joel was born on July 14, 1972 in Peoria, IL., son of Jerome and Karen (Carlson) Ferguson. He is survived by his father, Jerome, his son, Patrick Ferguson, fiance, Jessica Goembel, sister, Shannon (Scottie) Gentry, brother, Ryan (Kellie) Ferguson, all of Peoria, brother Eric (Lan) Ferguson of Champaign, and sister, Katy (Phil) Spangler of Lafayette, IN., grandfather Thomas Geselschap of Bella Vista, Arkansas, six nephews, one niece and “cousin Steve” -- his good friend Steve Ringenberg of Peoria.
Joel is preceded in death by his mother, Karen Ferguson.
He graduated from Peoria Notre Dame High School in 1990 and continued on to receive an Associate’s degree from Illinois Central College.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Joel enjoyed attending sporting events, the outdoors, taking long walks, and traveling out West. Joel was an avid Dodger’s fan attending many games and tried to make his son a fan too (but he chose the Cubs). Last year he hiked the Grand Canyon and went on a once in a lifetime trip with his son to California. He was a class clown and never outgrew it – family and friends could always count on him to make funny faces (and deny it), push buttons, and a good laugh. He was a people person and talked to anyone and everyone and had many friends. It was not uncommon for someone to say “Are you related to Joel Ferguson?” He enjoyed intellectual and political conversations. Joel enjoyed playing sports; he played football at Notre Dame High School and enjoyed golfing and bowling in his spare time. He enjoyed music, especially Johnny Cash, The Doors, The Beastie Boys. He saw the Beastie Boys many times in concert. He saw life as an adventure and was spontaneous and lived in the moment. Most of all, he loved spending time with his son, Patrick and being with his family. He was a beloved father, son, brother, uncle, godfather and friend, who will be truly missed.
Visitation will be held between the hours of 4:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM, Friday June 9, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Peoria, with an additional visitation one hour prior to mass. Fr. Giles Gilbert will officiate. Cremation Rites will be accorded following funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a fund for his son, Patrick Ferguson in c/o PNC Bank in Peoria.
