Obituary for William J. Seitz
Peoria - William J. Seitz, 91, of Peoria passed away at home on Wednesday September 28, 2016.
Bill was born April 13, 1925 in Peoria to Leo and Ethel Seitz. He married Helen Gebhardt on April 30, 1949 and they were married for over 60 years until Helen passed away on May 23, 2009.
Bill was recruited by the legendary Coach Ennio Arboit at Spalding Institute and he became the starting Guard on the undefeated 1942 Fighting Irish Football team. The team was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Bill served in the US Navy during WWII as radioman on PBY-Catalinas, patrolling the Panama Canal and the San Francisco Bay for enemy submarines. Post WWII, Bill earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Bradley University in Education. He started his 18 year career as a teacher and coach at Bartonville grade school in 1949. Bill was promoted to Principal in 1968 at Webster-Douglas and retired after 15 years as Principal of Sterling Grade School in 1983.
Bill was an avid sports fan and the Cardinals were his passion. As loyal Cardinals fan, Bill never missed a Cardinals game for over 90 years. Earlier this year Bill said “I’d rather die than see the Cubs in the World Series!”
