Obituary for William J. O'Neill, Jr.

PEORIA-William J. O’Neill, Jr., 79 of Peoria, died at 8:32 a.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at home. Born on November 27, 1927 in Peoria, he was the son of William J. Sr. and Anna Menge O’Neill. He married Margaret L. Swearingen on August 5, 1950 in Peoria. She survives. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Surviving are seven children, William J. (Ann) O’Neill III of Peoria, Nora O’Neill of Peoria, Grady (Jennifer) O’Neill of Peoria, Jane (Charles) Purcell of Peoria, P. Joseph (Janet) O’Neill of Peoria, Daniel (Laura) O’Neill of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Molly (Todd) Fulton of Peoria and 22 grandchildren. He attended St. Bernard’s Grade School in Peoria and graduated from Spalding Institute in 1945. He attended Villanova University. He served in the United States Navy Air Corps from 1945-1948. William took over the family trucking business of O’Neill Brothers Transfer & Storage in 1954. He served on the boards of the Illinois Trucking Association and St. Augustine Manor. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 627, the Peoria Transportation Club and Mount Hawley Country Club of Peoria. He was a generous benefactor to many local community organizations. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Peoria for the past 30 years. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 26, 2007 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Jason Gray officiating. There will be no visitation. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria.
