Obituary for William J. Kelley, Sr.

PEORIA HEIGHTS-William J. Kelley, Sr., 83 of Peoria Heights, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at ManorCare Health Services in Peoria. He was born on May 29, 1924 in Peoria to Harry and Bridget Moran Kelley. He married Betty J. Tompkins on September 21, 1946 in Peoria. She passed away on February 26, 1992 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son, William J. Kelley, Jr. and one daughter, Susan Toohill. He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen (Thomas) Challacombe of Putnam, IL; twelve grandchildren, Colleen Rinehart, John Hibbert, William James Kelley III, Christopher Kelley, Kevin Kelley, Sgt. Bridget Kelley, Julie Miller, Kathleen Toohill, Beth Wertz, Steve Toohill, Mary Bridget Toohill and Joe Toohill; seven great-grandchildren and one brother, Edward Kelley of Peoria. William managed the Electrical Store Room for Cilco at Pioneer Park for 30 years. He was a World War II Army veteran serving with the 32nd Division-Red Arrow. He was a member of Knights of Columbus #427 Third Degree Spalding Council and #206 Fourth Degree Spalding Assembly serving as District Deputy for one year and also a former Grand Knight. He also was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, VFW #2602 and Coodies and a Charter Member of Bishop Dunne. William served as Trustee in Peoria Heights for three terms. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and a Permanent Deacon of the Peoria Diocese where he was ordained on May 17, 1997, retiring in 2003. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at St. Thomas Church with Msgr. William A. Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at St. Thomas Church with recitation of the rosary at 7:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Church Building Fund.
