Obituary for William Evans

WEST PEORIA - William P. Evans, 92, of West Peoria died at 6:58 a.m. Sunday, June 14, 2015, at Rosewood, Peoria.
William was born in Peoria to Paul D. and Emma Evans. He married Eugenie Gebhardt on July 31, 1949, in Peoria. He later married Maxine Robinson on Oct. 17, 1981, in Peoria.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Atteberry.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine; his two daughters, Susan (Lillard) Twitty of East Peoria and Kathleen Bilgutay of Wallingford, Pa.; one son, William C. (Kathleen) Evans of Germantown Hills; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
William graduated from Glen Oak Grade School in 1936 and Peoria High School in 1940. He attended Bradley University and later attended the University of Illinois and Purdue, where he graduated after World War II in 1947 with BS and MS degrees in physics and math. He then attended the US Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1944 and served in World War II as a naval officer aboard the USS Portland seeing action in all major battle in the South Pacific from 1944-46.
After graduating from the U of I in 1947, he taught in the math department at Bradley. More recently, he also taught and tutored in math at ICC in East Peoria. Concurrently with teaching in the evening school at Bradley, he worked in the research department at Caterpillar 36 years, during which time he published 21 technical papers.
William was a member of technical societies in SAE, ASM, and APS until his death.
He was a member of St John Lutheran Church in Washburn, Ill., and later became a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Peoria.
The family wishes to thank OSF, the doctors, nurses, and the Family Health Hospice staff at Rosewood.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2015, at Wright Salmon Mortuary. Father Geoffrey Horton will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private graveside service will be later in the day in Stewart-Harmony Cemetery in Metamora.
Memorials may be made to the ICC Math Department or St. Mark Catholic School Fund.
