Obituary for William E. Drew

PEORIA – William E. Drew, Sr., age 88, of Peoria, passed away 10:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2017 at his home.

Married to his beloved Patricia E. Drew on Feb. 14, 1953, in Peoria, he was the father of six, grandfather of twenty-one and great grandfather of five. Committed to service to others, Bill Drew spent his entire life serving his family, church and the Peoria community. He was selfless and avoided recognition for his numerous civic contributions. His quick smile, sharp wit and quiet charm welcomed all he met.

Mr. Drew, born April 28, 1928, was a lifelong resident of Peoria. After the death of his father while only five years old, Bill Drew was raised by his mother and sisters. He attended Cathedral Grade School, and Spalding Institute, graduating in 1946. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific Fleet as Electrician’s Mate. He earned the WW II Victory Medal. Upon his return, he benefitted from the GI Bill and obtained a Business Degree from Bradley University in 1952. Mr. Drew worked for 47 years at First Federal Savings and Loan Association, beginning as a teller immediately upon leaving the Navy and as student at Bradley and retiring there as an officer in 1995. As building manager of the Savings Center Tower, his oversight of building construction and addition of sky lights helped launch the Peoria skyline. He obtained a Masters in Business Administration from Bradley University in 1964, receiving his diploma with four of his young children in tow. He later gave seminars and taught at Illinois Central College.

Then Peoria Mayor Jim Maloof declared June 30, 1994 William E. Drew Day in recognition of Bill Drew’s contributions as past Chair of the Better Business Bureau, President of the Catholic Social Service, President of the Spalding Parent’s Board, Chair of the American Cancer Society
Crusade and Co-Chairman of the First Annual Steamboat Days.

Mr. Drew was a prestigious Marquette Honoree, awarded for outstanding service to the Catholic Diocese of Peoria. He was a lifetime member and 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Spalding Council #427. He attributed that long service to his membership to the Bishop’s Pontifical Crew from an early age.

He was a Cub Scout leader and coach, among other lifelong volunteerism involving his children. With Patricia, he was also very active in the Peoria Area Irish Community. He was one of the charter members of the Saint Patrick's Society and active in the Hibernian Society. He always found time to socialize. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Sand Trappers. The Peoria community was a better place for his lifelong contributions.

While his service to others is noteworthy, nothing compared to the love and devotion he had for Patricia, his wife of 57 years before her passing in 2010. His family is comforted knowing he rejoins her now, and their love can continue for eternity.

Mr. Drew is survived by his daughter, Molly (Mark) Cluskey of Peoria and their sons, Kevin (Wendy Kreutzer) Cluskey and Daniel (Jaclyn Stratman) Cluskey; son, William (Sheena Cormack) Drew of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and their sons, William, Ian and Ryan; son, Daniel (Jacqueline Dourlet) Drew of Clarendon Hills, Ill., and their children, Brennan, Connor, Patrick, Maura, Emmett and Evan; son, Michael (Sara Van Etten) Drew of Morton and their children, Catherine, Meghan and Michael; son, Timothy Drew of Peoria, Ill., and his children, Francis, Nora, James and William; and son, Matthew (Siobhan Kerrigan) Drew of Geneva, Ill., and their children, Eileen, Joseph and Julianna. Mr. Drew is also survived by his great grandchildren Grayson, Madelynn, William, Drew, and Jacob and nieces, nephews, cousins, wonderful in-laws and hundreds of caring friends. He is predeceased by his parents, William E, Drew and Jane Agnes (McAvoy) Drew, his sister Alice (Lester) Clausen and Mary Jane (William) Doersam.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1113 W. Bradley Ave., Peoria, IL 61606, with Msgr. Brian Brownsey officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. Mark Church. An additional visitation will be held one hour prior to mass. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Peoria.
