William C. “Corky” Robertson, age 88, of Peoria, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at his residence.

Corky was born August 6, 1931 in Peoria, IL, a son of Alfred J. and Clarissa (Coyte) Robertson. He married Dolores A. Frels on December 1, 1951 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are their three children, Amy (Douglas, deceased) Ziegler of Germantown Hills, Holly Williams of Peoria, and Brig Gen William (Sally) Robertson of Peoria.

He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Katie (Kevin) Fuller, Douglas Bielenberg, Brooke Williams, Brent (Sarah Pacheco) Williams, James, David and Elizabeth Robertson, Paige (Jodi Hoos) Ziegler and Laine Ziegler, as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lois Weidner and Marjorie Peterson and one brother, AJ “Jimmy” Robertson.

Corky proudly served in the Illinois Air National Guard and was a member of the 169th Fighter Interceptor Squadron which is now the 182nd Airlift Wing.

At Peoria High School he played Varsity baseball for four years and football for three, and was co-captain in both football and baseball his senior year. He was All-City guard his sophomore year, and All-City/Greater Peoria as a tackle his junior and senior years. During his senior year, he was named All-State by both the Chicago Daily News and Champaign News-Gazette. At Bradley University, Robertson started as Offensive Center in football for three years and Catcher/1st Baseman for three years (freshmen were ineligible at that time). He played Sunday Morning League baseball for twelve years.

In 1953, he began his coaching career at Princeville High School where he served as head basketball, assistant football and head track coach. Returning to Peoria High in 1956 as an assistant coach, he was head coach in football from 1957 to 1965, compiling a record of 50 wins, 20 losses and 8 ties.

His 1963 team was undefeated and untied, the first in the history of the school, and the 1957 team was Big 12 Champion. In 1963 and 1964, his teams were Mid-State 9 Champions. He also coached wrestling, golf, and assisted in basketball, track and baseball.

Robertson left coaching for administration in 1969, serving through 1987. As principal of Peoria High School, he was instrumental in bringing the State Cross Country meet to Peoria, serving as meet manager for sixteen years. At Peoria High, he took the lead in developing many athletic programs and school facilities, including the Girls' Athletic Program.

Corky introduced and administered the first experimental injury prevention condition program to the IHSA. He was a basketball official for 20 years on both the high school and college scene and worked many tournaments. He served the Mid-State Conference as the President several times, and he is the only individual to have played, coached and administered the annual Thanksgiving “Turkey Day” football games between Manual and Central High Schools.

Corky was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame and was a former member and President. He was active all his life at Bradley University in Peoria. He was President of the Alumni Association and was in the Bradley Sports Hall of Fame. He also received the Orville Northdruft Lifetime Achievement Award. After retiring from Peoria District 150 schools, Corky was employed at Bradley University as the Athletic Ticket Manager from 1987-2001.

He was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served on several committees and was a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Peoria and received the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award.

A visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Peoria. A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 21, 2019 also at the church with a one hour prior visitation. The Rev. Jonathan Thomas will officiate and inurnment of cremains will be in the Columbarium at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church following services.
