Obituary for William A. Clarey

PEORIA-William A. Clarey, 84, of Peoria, passed away at 8:07 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Methodist Medical Center ER. He was born on June 10, 1924 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Stephen B. and Genevieve “Jennie” O’Hearn Clarey. He married Mary M. Laffey on September 18, 1948 in Carthage, IL. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Susan (Michael) Moore of Peoria and Sharon (Eric) Clarey Riegelman of Dallas, TX; three sons, Stephen (Glenda) Clarey of Redding, CA, William (Peggy) Clarey of Houston, TX and Timothy (Julia) Clarey of Dallas, TX; thirteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Janice (William) Bracken of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Harold and Bernard, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Kathryn. He was Dean of the College of Business Administration, 1954-72; Professor of Business Administration, 1972-91; Professor Emeritus, 1991-present. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving for three years. He was a member of Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Provident Federal Savings & Loan Association, Chairman of the Board; Peoria Rotary Club, President; Slevin Container Corp., Chairman of the Board; Shamrock Plastic Corp., Chairman of the Board; Peoria Area Catholic High School Board, President; Peoria Catholic Diocese Cursillo, Lay Director; Cursillo #24, Rector; University Club, President, Bradley University; St. Vincent de Paul Church School Board President; St. Vincent de Paul Church Communion Minister and Men’s Club; Co-Chairman Fund Drive to Build St. Vincent de Paul Church; Peoria Diocese Marriage Encounter, President Couple; Caper Ballroom Dance Club, President Couple; American Economics Association; Father Sweeney School Parents, President; Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity and Beta Gamma Sigma professional fraternity, Bradley; Who’s Who in America; Arrowhead Country Club; Willow Knolls Country Club; Bradley University Mergen Award for Public Service; Seniors “54” Golf League; Trails Edge Condominium Homeowners Association, President; and Author of: Bradley Business Begins, A History of the Bradley University Foster College of Business Administration, 1995. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at St. Vincent de Paul Church with Msgr. Jason A. Gray officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with recitation of the rosary at 6:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church Building Fund or Foster College of Business at Bradley University.
