Obituary for Wilbur C. Schaefer
Peoria- Wilbur Carls Schaefer, 91, of Peoria, passed away at 8:21 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at UnityPoint Health - Methodist.
Born September 18, 1925 in Beardstown, IL, to Glenn F. and Selma E. (Carls) Schaefer, he married Naomi Carpenter on September 10, 1949 at Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria, IL. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gregory C. (Carolyn) of West Des Moines, IA, and Kurt C. (Anne) of Wayland, MI; 5 grandchildren, Heather (Tyler) Mitchell, Mark Schaefer, Benjamin (Jane) Schaefer, Elizabeth Schaefer, and Angela (Troy) Schmidt; three great-grandchildren, Heidi, Jonathan, and Clara Mitchell, and another expected great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lois Singleton.
Wilbur served as a Navy signalman in World War II (September 1943--April 1946), was a graduate of Bradley University (B.S. 1949, M.S. 1950), and worked as a chemist and administrator at the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria throughout his career, spanning over 40 years. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Cereal Chemists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wilbur received the William F. Geddes Award for his service to the American Association of Cereal Chemists, which included terms as national treasurer 1972-74. He was also involved in many community organizations, and was the president of the local National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) chapter at the time of his death. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church for over 80 years, and taught Sunday School and Bible classes there for over 60 years, along with serving on a variety of church boards. Wilbur received recognition from the Illinois State Science Exposition for his service to Illinois student science fairs, and received the Beverly VonBehren service award for his work supporting science fair education at Christ Lutheran School.
A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Hillside Village, 6901 Galena Road, at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Christ Lutheran Church, 2020 W. Malone Street, Peoria. Pastor Karl Eckhoff will officiate, with visitation one hour prior to services.
