Obituary for Wendy Maria Torrey

PEORIA-Wendy Maria Torrey, age 38, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, in Taylor, Michigan of a gunshot wound. An investigation is still active. Wendy resided in Bettendorf, Iowa. Born Dec 4th, 1972, in Peoria, Illinois to Diane Beregevin Torrey and John Torrey, Wendy was raised in Peoria, attended Holy Family Grade School, Richwood’s and Washington High School, where she was a good student and an outstanding athlete, winning a Division One basketball scholarship to Northeastern Illinois University. Even though Wendy had attended Washington High School only a year and a half, she was selected by her graduating class to be the student speaker at their commencement exercises where she wowed the audience. She had a sparkling and effervescent, personality, engaging all who were around her. A characteristic she kept her entire life. Wendy enlisted in the United States Army in 1997, where she met her husband, Jeremy as they were both MPs in California at a missile base. Wendy saw duty in Bosnia with the military police. Her platoon asked her to man their M-60 machine gun and she walked point on foot patrols, seeing things young women are not supposed to see. Wendy married Jeremy before she was shipped overseas. Jeremy was subsequently sent to Bosnia as well where they had a honeymoon in the Alps, where their son Trevor was conceived. Wendy was assigned as a bodyguard to the wife of the General in charge of European Operation for the Army. She received an early out due to pregnancy and moved to Corpus Christi Tx. with her parents joining Jeremy in Fort Polk, La. upon his return, where their son Trevor was born in 1997. Wendy was very proud of her Army Experience and understood the value her sacrifices made for our country. She was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. Upon Jeremy’s discharge, they moved to Corpus Christi, Tx. Wendy was an instructor at a juvenile offender boot camp. She moved to Bettendorf Ia. and received a bachelor’s degree in business management from Western Illinois University. She worked for Congressmen Bruce Braley concentrating in Veteran Affairs and worked for the Veteran’s Administration Hospital system in Iowa City, Iowa. Wendy’s husband, Jeremy died in an SUV rollover accident in Colorado in 2003. Wendy was undergoing rehabilitative services for post traumatic stress disorder at the Battle Creek Michigan, Veteran’s Hospital at the time of her death. Wendy was a free spirit engaging all around her in the enjoyment of life. A truly outstanding athlete, she took money from the boys in high school whom she talked into betting their lunch money on playing basketball. Some of her escapades are legendary, such as the time she brought a greased pig to Washington H.S. on Senior Day and let it loose in the halls, even though the staff knew it was coming and were vigilant. Or the time while in High School, she had a party at her parent’s home while they were away and talked the police officer who showed up into helping direct traffic for the party. All of our lives were truly enriched by her presence. Her greatest love was her son Trevor, whom she guided into becoming a truly kind, sensitive and intelligent young man. Wendy is survived by her parents, John & Diane Torrey of Corpus Christi, her brother Chris, of Corpus Christi, with whom her son Trevor will live, niece Jessica and nephew Christopher, grandparents, John and Rita Torrey, grandmother, Maria Bergevin, numerous aunts uncles and cousins, who all miss her exuberant spirit. Wendy was cremated. A memorial service will be held @ 4 PM on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Wright and Salmon Mortuary (309-688-4441) Peoria, Illinois, where visitation will be from 2-4 PM. Interment of Wendy’s ashes will be in Corpus Christi, Texas, pending completion of a new Veteran’s Cemetery this summer. Memorial donations for Trevor’s college education may be sent to Trevor Trejo, C/O Diane Torrey 7253 Yaupon Dr. Corpus Christi, Texas, 78414
