Obituary for Ward O. Lane

Peoria-Ward O. Lane, age 77, of Peoria Heights, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018, at Liberty Village in Peoria.

Ward was born on October 30, 1941, in Peoria, IL, the son of Eugene and Goldie “Peggie” (Judy) Lane. He married Janet E. Barnett on September 1, 1963, in Chillicothe, IL. She survives.

Ward is also survived by their two sons; David (Teresa) Lane of Peoria and Daniel (Sandy) Lane of Washington, IL, and 5 grandchildren; Michael, Ashley, Brett, Christian and Wesley Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ward was a 1959 graduate of Illinois Valley Central High School in Chillicothe and attended Illinois State University for a year to pursue a career as a teacher, but had to return home because of his father becoming ill.

Initially he worked in the Display Department of Block and Kuhl (Carson Pirie Scott) in downtown Peoria, where he met the love of his life, Janet. He went on to work for the Sunshine Biscuit Co. and for the majority of his working life, was a food broker for several companies; Glatz Bros., Alex Pesses & Associates, and finally, Lane & Associates. He came out of semi-retirement to then work for Getz Fire, Multi-Ad, Waugh Foods, Big Lots and Phoenix Affiliates Business Brokers, before officially retiring.

Ward loved playing the piano and could also play the guitar. He was a former member of the Peoria Barbershop Chorus in the late 60’s and early 70’s and sang in a quartet as well. He was a talented artist and also designed commercial logos for several area businesses.

He was heavily involved with youth sports in Peoria Heights and was one of the founders of the Peoria Heights Junior Basketball League, simply known as JBL. He was also an IHSA basketball and soccer official, working games for both high school boys and girls and boys soccer games all over central Illinois.

Ward was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, along with the Peoria Notre Dame Irish, SIUE Cougars and the Washington Panthers. He also enjoyed playing golf.

Most of all, Ward was a kind, caring and loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather, who had an infectious smile and personality that lit up the room. He especially loved attending his grandchildren’s high school and college sporting events, band concerts and all of their activities.
