Obituary for W. Dean McCoy

PEORIA – W. Dean McCoy, 87, of Peoria passed away at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at his residence. Dean was born on April 9, 1927, in Oak Hill, Ill., to Paul W. and Margie (Colvin) McCoy. He married Marian C. Koenig on July 26, 1947, in Robbinsdale, Minn. She preceded him in death on February 23, 2011 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Paul Robert; son-in-law, Richard Johnson; sister, Pauline Gould; and brother, Jack L. McCoy. He is survived by two sons, Michael D. (Amy) McCoy and Robert J. (Sherry) McCoy; one daughter, Patricia R. Johnson; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Dean attended Robbinsdale High School in Robbinsdale, Minn., where he met his wife. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. Beginning 1951, after returning to Illinois from Minnesota, Dean was the owner/ manager of Phillips 66 gas station on Jefferson and MacArthur Hwy. From 1956-1966, he managed Sugar Creek Creamery before later becoming a salesman for Sugar Creek Foods, with territories in Illinois and Iowa and later working out of Peoria. From there he became a salesman for Illinois Blueprint before opening their office supply division under McCoy’s Inc. in Peoria Heights. Additionally, he managed the Elks Club in West Peoria, Knights of Columbus #427 on Willow Knolls Road, and Dean’s Steak House on Washington in Peoria. He then worked for the State of Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS). After retiring from working full-time, he worked part-time at Red Carpet Car Wash on Knoxville for about 14 years. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was past president of Catholic Social Services, the Peoria Heights Chamber of Commerce, and South-West Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree and Knights of Columbus, Spalding Assembly #206, Fourth Degree. In his last days, Dean was cared for by OSF Hospice; his daughter, Patricia Johnson; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Johnson. A memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father John Cyr will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private burial of ashes will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Kickapoo at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Run, Ride, or Drive, 4722 N. Sheridan Rd., Peoria, IL 61614.
