Obituary for Virginia Catherine Miller

PEORIA-Virginia Catherine (Sheedy) Miller, 94, died Wednesday morning, November 7, 2007 at OSF-St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Most recently, she had been suffering the effects of acute leukemia. Mrs. Miller was born south of Seneca, Illinois to William J. and Edna (Donelson) Sheedy on March 14, 1913. She married Ralph F. Miller on November 26, 1949 and made their home in Streator. He died of cancer in 1971. She is survived by their son, Monsignor Thomas R. Miller of Peoria and one brother, Paul J. Sheedy, of Ottawa. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Earl W. Sheedy, of Detroit, MI. Mrs. Miller was reared in LaSalle, Marseilles and Ottawa. She was a 1926 graduate of St. Patrick’s Grade School, Ottawa, and a 1930 graduate of St. Xavier’s Academy (now Marquette High School), Ottawa. She was one of the founding members of the Illinois Fruit & Produce Corp. in Streator and worked there as office manager and lead bookkeeper for 50 years, retiring in 1980. In 1932 she was selected as “Miss Ottawa” and was awarded a cruise through the Panama Canal Zone and VIP vacation in Cuba. Always an avid and ready traveler, she enjoyed a number of trips around the United States and Europe. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and bridge. Her part of the war effort was on coffee and donuts detail as the GIs traveled through Streator on the old Santa Fe and New York Central Lines. Virginia was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Elks and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She had a great affection and allegiance to both of her son’s Peoria pastorates, St. Bernard and St. Vincent de Paul, where she developed many friends. Services will begin on Sunday, November 11th at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with visitation from 4pm to 7pm. The rosary will also be recited during this time. Continued visitation will begin at 10:00 am on Monday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 404 N. Park Street, Streator, IL, followed by The Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 am. Burial will be next to her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Streator.
