Obituary for Valeria A. Grieves

Metamora- Valeria A. (Pratt) Grieves, passed away peacefully with her six children and family surrounding her at 1:31 am, February 18, 2017 at Snyder Village in Metamora, IL.

Valeria, daughter of Charles Elmer and Cecelia (Gilles) Pratt, was born on October 10, 1930 in Kickapoo, Illinois. She grew up in Kickapoo, attended St. Mary’s Elementary School in Kickapoo, and the Academy of Our Lady High School, in Peoria. At the age of 18, she began work at CILCO in Peoria. She loved to go to dances and was an avid bowler.

In 1952 she met Donald R. Grieves, the love of her life. They met while she was scoring a bowling tournament at the request of her brother Norbert. On October 23, 1954, Valeria and Donald were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kickapoo, Illinois.

Val and Don were blessed with six children. Val was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. She was a lifelong member of Holy Family Parish.

The church was a major part of her life. She loved to: pray her rosary, play cards, bowl, and golf.

She was an avid walker, enjoyed chocolate, and was a bingo volunteer for Holy Family Church.

She co-owned the snack bar at Town and Country Bowl, worked at Casual Corner, and served school lunches at Holy Family School. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. Val was a cancer survivor and supported cancer fundraising.

Valeria was preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; sisters Evelyn, Lucille, and Irene; and brothers John, Norbert, and Charles. Left to cherish her memory are children: Timothy (Deborah) Grieves of Sioux City, Iowa; Christopher Grieves of Aptos, California; Danny (Kim) Grieves of Metamora, Illinois; Cheryl Ann (Robert) Ducharme of Elburn, Illinois; Kathleen (Earl) Harvill of Bettendorf, Iowa; and Joanie (Ben) Manibog of West Chicago, Illinois. Grandchildren Erin, Audra, Nike, Amy, Tara, Emily, Meg, Colin, DR, Craig, Laura, Nolan, Christopher, Daniel, Nicholas, Benny, Jackson, Timothy, Heather, and Zach; eleven great grandchildren; her sister, Sister Lorraine, of Chicago, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 AM. The Franciscan Friars will officiate.

Cremation Rites will be accorded.

Burial of cremains will follow at a later date at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL.

Memorials in Valeria’s name, may be made to Holy Family Parish.
