Obituary for Thomas "Tom" Poehls
On the morning of March 13, 2023, Thomas Edward Poehls died at the age of 73 while being cared for by the emergency room staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Tom was born in Peoria to Alice and Charles Poehls in 1949. He grew up in Peoria attending Holy Family School and Richwoods High School. He graduated in 1971 from the University of Notre Dame and earned a master’s from the University of Oklahoma in civil and environmental engineering. Tom worked as an engineer for Greeley and Hansen for almost his whole career building wastewater treatment plants. He was based in Chicago, Virginia, and for the last 30 years in Indianapolis where he retired in 2014.
Tom was a loyal alum of Notre Dame purchasing and sharing football tickets every season. He was a race car enthusiast attending the Indy 500 annually as well as the Nascar and Formula 1 races at the Brickyard. He was an avid hiker and skier and made regular trips to the Rockies from Colorado to Canada. He enjoyed running and did the minimarathons that finished on the Brickyard racetrack. He always loved a round of golf with friends.
Tom dedicated himself to his family attending all the usual events as well as multiple trips to Ireland with his parents and his Irish dancing nieces, Lara and Bridget. He traveled with his cousin Margo Stone to China for the adoption of his niece Marie-Rose.
Survivors include the three mentioned nieces, one grandnephew Rory, cousins Margo and Maura, and his sister Sherry.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 1:00 PM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM. Father David McShane will officiate, and entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum.
Preferred memorials in Tom’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Salvation Army.
