Peoria – Thomas Joseph Lavin, age 89, of Peoria, passed away surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 7:15 AM at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Born March 23, 1925 in Peoria, Illinois, he was a son to the late Thomas J. and Mary Catherine (Sunderland) Lavin. He married Dorothy Mae O’Brien on June 12, 1948 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Peoria, Illinois. His beloved wife survives. He is also survived by his children: Tom (wife Glenda) Lavin of Reno, NV, Rich (wife Colleen) Lavin of Peoria, IL, Charlie (wife Camille) Lavin of Peoria, IL, Mary (husband Tom) Ryon of Washington, IL, Barb (husband Pat) Coyle of Washington, IL, Patti (husband Randy) Simmons of Peoria, IL, and Dody (husband Mike) Norman of Peoria, IL. 26 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren also survive him. Tom honorably served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a 1943 graduate of Spalding Institute. Tom was employed by DuBois Chemicals Company, retiring in 1992 after more than 40 years. A long-time member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, he was more recently a parishioner of St. Philomena’s Catholic Church. After his retirement, he enjoyed attending daily Mass, spending time with his family, and supporting his favorite teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and the University of Notre Dame football team. He also volunteered at OSF St. Francis Medical Center where he served over 10,000 hours helping others, and he truly enjoyed golfing with the same foursome of close friends for over 35 years. Tom’s personality was marked by good humor and optimism. He never met a stranger. The great passions in Tom’s life were his Catholic faith and his family. He took great joy in the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom was a constant example of fidelity, commitment and love for his entire family. He will be missed beyond measure. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son, John Anthony Lavin, his brother Jack (wife Ann) Lavin and his sisters, Josephine (Husband Julius) Matarelli and Catherine Lavin, and his infant grandson, William Gabriel Lavin.
