Obituary for Thomas R. Schmitt

PEORIA-Thomas R. Schmitt, 70, of Peoria, and formerly of the Quad Cities, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Monday, June 14, 2010, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Born on August 6, 1939, in Peoria, to Joseph T. and Pearl Beach Schmitt. He married Mary Lynne Pfaffmann on February 2, 1974 in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Angela (Dave) Gomez of Hinsdale, IL and Sharon (Hans) Nelson of Chicago; one son, Joseph Schmitt of Peoria; seven grandchildren, David, Justin, Taylor Marie and Conner Gomez all of Hinsdale, IL, Thomas, Andrew and Alexis Nelson all of Chicago, IL; five sisters, Marilyn (Louis) Scroggins, Joanie (Tom) Burke, Loretta Faley, Katie (Bruce) Boyer all of Peoria, Ginny (Jim) Verdun of Colona, IL; a cousin, Bev (Rol) Flanagan of Morton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph T. and Pearl Beach Schmitt, step mother, Mary Ellen Schmitt, four brothers, Don, Jerry “Chick”, George and Paul Schmitt. Tom worked for Wilkins Pipe and Supply and Thrall as office manager in inside sales. He also worked at the Peoria County Courthouse from 2005-2010 as a courier. He was a 1958 graduate of Spalding. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Order of Alhambra, Knights of Columbus 427 Third Degree Spalding Council, and St. Patrick Society. His smile could light up a room, his laugh could warm any heart, and his love for his family and friends will live forever in all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2010, at St. Thomas Church with Msgr. William Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the church with recitation of the Rosary at 8:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be one hour before the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Church/School, 904 E.
