Obituary for Thomas H. Gilles

CHILLICOTHE Thomas H. Gilles, 72, of Chillicothe passed away at 6:31 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical center surrounded by his family.
Thomas was born on Sept. 25, 1943, in Peoria son to the late Howard J. and Gladys Heinz-Gilles. On Sept. 26, 1964, he married Lavona Conway at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Peoria. She survives.
He worked as a machine repairman for Caterpillar for 38 years until his retirement.
Thomas was a proud member of UAW Local 974 for 38 years.
He enjoyed farming with his father on their family farm in Kickapoo. He was an avid card player and Sudoku puzzle solver. He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, and gardening. In his spare time, he built and enjoyed flying his Ultra Light aircraft. He was a St. Louis Cardinal fan and enjoyed watching them play the Cubs.
Thomas was happily married to the love of his life for 51 years and was a devoted family man who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two children,. Michael T. (Donna Jobe) Gilles of Davenport, Iowa, and Jill T. (Mike) Rodier of Peoria; one grandchild, Dan (Julie) Gilles of Washington, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Mackenzie Gilles; two sisters, Helen (Bob) Largent of Yates Cty, Ill., and Janet (Danny) Hart of Brimfield, Ill.; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe Gilles; and one sister, Judy Shaffer.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo. Father Joseph Dondanville will officiate and burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Kickapoo. Wright Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Memorials in Thomass memory may be made to St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe or St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo.
