Obituary for Thomas Driscoll

WASHINGTON - Thomas Frank Driscoll 86 , of Washington, Illinois died at his home, June 13, 2012. Thomas “Tom” was born June 16, 1925 in Chicago, the son of Edward Driscoll and Helen Brozicek Driscoll. He married Margaret Mae Wagner on December 28, 1946 in Maywood, Illinois. She survives, along with their 10 children Carol (Bill) Colburn of Champaign, Paul (Liz) of Mapleton, David (Galeen) of Metamora, Jane (fiancé, Korter Moran) Hardesty of Oglesby, Pete of East Peoria, Mary (Mike ) DuBois of Germantown Hills, Joe (Jane Genzel) of East Peoria, Betsy (Keith) Knight of East Peoria, Dan (Lori) of Canton and Ellen of Arkansas; twenty-one grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; brothers Paul, Richard, John, and Neil; and sister Kathleen. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edward. Tom graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1943, where he participated in sports, music and the school newspaper. In 1943 he captained his high school’s basketball team to the Illinois State Finals in Champaign. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he received pilot training. Upon being discharged from the Navy in 1946 he attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, graduating in 1949 with a Master’s Degree in journalism from The Medill School of Journalism. He began his career in the newspaper business in 1949 at the Peoria Journal- Transcript, which merged with the Peoria Star shortly after his tenure began. In 1954, he was named Assistant City Editor of the Peoria Journal Transcript; in 1956, City Editor, PJ Star1970; Assistant Managing Editor; in 1973, Managing Editor; in 1984, Executive Editor, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. In the late 1960’s he was a contributing writer and photographer for Rotor and Wing Magazine, a PJ Star publication. He taught a course in Journalism at Bradley University in 1983. Tom enjoyed discussing history, travelling, playing golf, the Chicago Cubs, and active involvement with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of ERS Healthcare Services and Methodist Hospice Services. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Franciscan Fathers will be officiating. A private visitation will be held at the mortuary prior to the Mass. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held after the committal service. People are invited to The Waterhouse at 619 Water St in Peoria from 2 to 6 p.m. for food and fellowship.
