Obituary for Theresa "Tracey" Stinson

Peoria- Theresa M. “Tracey” Stinson, age 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at her home in Peoria, IL

Tracey was born on June 26, 1935 in Sterling, IL, the daughter of Leonard and Maude (Brown) Peska, She married Jean L. “Barney” Stinson on November 25, 1966 in Dixon, IL He preceded her in death on February 3, 2012, in Sterling, IL

Tracey is survived by 7 children: Laura Gilmore (Larry Gilmore) Marquette Heights, IL; J. David Hughes (Jennifer) of Quincy, Florida; Tracey LaForge of Peoria, IL; Suzanne Ewalt (Jerry) of Galesburg, IL; Jo Schmidt (Terry) of Milledgeville, IL; Maureen O’Leary (Rusty) of Boise, Idaho; and Steve Perry Stinson (Kelly) of Machesney Park, IL; along with 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Leonard “Sandy” Peska; and three sons: Thomas Hughes, Christopher Hughes, John Stinson, and her daughter, Mary Beth Hughes.

Tracey’s interests were many: crocheting, needlepoint and genealogy among them, but she was rarely seen without a book beside her. She was a very gifted artist especially when drawing in charcoal. Her faith and love of music were constant throughout her life. Tracey was involved in the Lionesses and Daughters of the American Revolution and served multiple times as Worthy Matron and spent many years as a Grand Lecturer during her over 50-year commitment to the Order of the Eastern Star (OES). She and her husband together shared many years dedicated to OES and other Masonic bodies. She also gave back to her community by serving as Treasurer of Good Neighbors for several years.

Tracey’s first and greatest love was her children and family, One of her favorite things to do was play all types of games with family and many nights were spent doing just that, Pinochle was her favorite card game but there were many more: from Pictionary where she created works of art to Scrabble where she tried to use all 7 letters on every turn (there was no such thing as a quick game of Scrabble when Mom played). One of her son David’s fondest memories of his Mom was a particular game of Pennies played while on vacation in Canada which will go down in family infamy. Her last game of Mahjong with her daughter Tracey ended with a win and a sheepish grin that said “Did I do that?” followed by a fist pump and a “You Betcha!” And don’t forget Scattergories, where she and daughter Laura almost always came up with the same answers because they were “98%” alike.

At family gatherings dinner time was always a guessing game. She was notorious for always underestimating the time dinner would be ready and it became a beloved joke among family. She was a fabulous cook and no matter how long we had to wait, it was well worth it. No family gathering was complete without her famous potato and macaroni salad.

Everyone in Tracey’s circle was blessed to have known her. She unselfishly shared her talents and wisdom with family and friends alike. Her wit and humor was a priceless gift cherished by anyone who knew her.

While there is great sadness with her departure from us, there is great joy in her meeting Jesus face-to-face and dancing in celebration among angels with her heavenly family right beside her.
