Obituary for Susan Basalay

FARMINGTON Susan J. Basalay, 66, of Farmington passed away at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at her residence after exhibiting the courage to live with ALS.
Susan was born on Aug. 13, 1949, in LaSalle, Ill., to the late Everett and Vera (Montignoli) Gillett. She married her high school sweetheart, Greg Basalay, on May 15, 1971. He survives.
She is also survived by two children, Heather (Rich) Patterson and Erica (Brad) Roberts both of Dunlap; and four grandchildren, Morgan and Landon Patterson and Cole and Chloe Roberts.
Susan attended LaSalle-Peru High School, where she was proud to be a Cavallette. She then attended Stephens College, where she earned her bachelor degree. She later attended Illinois State University, where she earned her graduate degree in dance.
She began her career teaching dance at the Canton YMCA and Illinois Central College. She then opened the Susan Basalay School of Dance in Farmington, where she got so much joy out of sharing her passion of dance for nearly 40 years.
Susan was a very loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She always made every family gathering and holiday special and enjoyed the smiles her hard work put on everyones faces.
She loved to shop and was always on the hunt for the perfect purchase; but her most favorite times were ones spent on the beach with family, rain or shine.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Dustin Schultz will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015, at Wright Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the Rosary at 6:45 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass and burial of ashes will be in Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation, the American Cancer Society, or for Masses in her memory.
