Obituaries
Stephen F. Sprenger, age 77, of Peoria, passed away at 12:37 AM on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria with his family by his side.
Steve was a loved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and an amazing friend.
Born October 19, 1945 in Peoria to Joseph Edward Sprenger and Marion (Stein) Sprenger. Surviving are his loving wife, Kettie, and their children Nathan (Dawn) Sprenger of Elgin, IL, Ashlee (Brad) Rauba of Queen Creek, AZ; and his brother Scott (Marilee) Sprenger of Peoria, IL as well as his grandchildren Kyle and Tyler Sprenger. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Amanda (Joey) Sarmiento.
Steve was raised in Peoria where he attended Whittier Grade School and graduated from Peoria High School with the Class of 1964. Upon graduating, Steve attended Robert Morris College in Carthage, IL where he graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1969.
After college, Steve worked as Director of College and Community Relations for Robert Morris College. After moving back to Peoria, Steve began working for his family’s business, Stein Hardware and Supply Company. While working there, he fell in love with sales and completed his career working for Tri-State Company, Consumer Division, Bettendorf, Iowa, in wholesale distribution of Toro consumer products. Over the years, he earned numerous sales awards.
In 1965, Steve enlisted in the Air National Guard of Illinois and served as a Staff Sergeant Fire Protection Specialist until his Honorable Discharge in 1971. Over the years, he also served as a commissioner on the Illinois Criminal Justice Commission and the Committee for Police Community Relations, Peoria Police Department. Steve was a devoted member of the Heart of Illinois Fair Board for over twenty years. In his free time, Steve loved golfing, hunting, adoring our family dogs, spending time in his yard and vacationing with family and friends.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Msgr. Jason Gray will officiate. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at 11:00AM at St. Thomas Catholic Church. There will be a visitation one-hour prior to the funeral mass. Private entombment of ashes will be later at Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Steve’s memory may be made to St Thomas the Apostle Church or OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home or a charity of the donor’s choice.
