Obituary for Stella A. O'Hanlon
Stella A. O’Hanlon died at 1:37 AM on February 24, 2007 at her home in Peoria, Illinois. Her husband and children were present at the time of her death. She was born to Constantine and Helen Papacosma Pavlakis in Manhattan, New York, May 27, 1943. She married Timothy A. O’Hanlon on July 5, 1969 in Garden City, New York. She attended Freeport Grade Schools and Baldwin High School in Long Island, New York. After receiving a degree in primary education from the State University of New York at Courtland she taught third grade for several years in Bayport, NY. She raised her family in Peoria, Illinois; Vancouver, British Columbia; Mentor, Ohio; and Hong Kong. She worked with Tri-County Women Strength in the early 1980’s as an abuse educator for children. She received a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Bradley University in 1991 and worked as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the Peoria area for more than 15 years. In addition to practicing independently in Peoria Heights, she worked as a staff counselor for Oncology/Hematology Associates in Peoria and provided numerous workshops and classes through the Peoria Park District and the Cancer Center for Healthy Living. She specialized in counseling on grief and loss. She also taught relaxation training, stress management, and mind-body medicine. In 2000, she was named Outstanding Practitioner by Chi Sigma Iota, an international honor society for professional counselors. She was a co-founder of the Cancer Center for Healthy Living in Peoria, Illinois, and served as a board member for many years. She served at the Center until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Thomas catholic Church in Peoria Heights. She is survived by her husband, Timothy, and three children and their spouses: Sean (Rachel), Matthew (Wendy), and Sarah (Brian). She is also survived by three grandchildren: Regan, Kevan and Rian. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 1, 2007 at St. Thomas Church. Rev. Thomas Taylor and Msgr. William Watson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the church with a meditation service in the adjacent chapel between 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Further visitation will be ½ hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s of Lourdes Cemetery in Metamora. Memorials may be made in her name to the Cancer Center for Healthy Living, 5215 N.
