EAST PEORIA - Sister M. Aniceta Magana, 97, a member of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis died at 2:17 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at the Motherhouse in East Peoria.
She was born on May 29, 1918, in Kansas City, Kans., to Marciano and Sarah (Ramos) Magana.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Czerniak in California and Esther Evans in Muscatine, Iowa.
She entered the convent on Jan. 3, 1940, at St. Francis Convent in Peoria. She attended Saint Francis School of Nursing in Peoria, receiving her diploma in 1952. During her 76 years in religious life, she served in the surgery department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Marquette, Mich., and at Fort Madison, Iowa and at St. Joseph-Lloyd Hospital in Menominee, Mich. She was appointed Sister-in-Charge at the Sacred Heart Convent in Ft. Madison and also served in the emergency room as a register nurse. In her later years, she worked in the EKG, EEG and stress test dept. at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, Mich. She retired to our Motherhouse Infirmary on Aug. 4, 2004.
She enjoyed reading the lives of the saints and listening to music. She also was very creative and made posters, banners and enjoyed drawing nature pictures and doing needlework.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Motherhouse in East Peoria, with Msgr. Rick Oberch officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2106, also at the Motherhouse, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. on Friday. Feb. 26. Burial will be in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
