Obituary for Sister Mary Luke Kapraun

WEST PEORIA-Sister Mary Luke Kapraun, 71, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception, died at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at Mother of Peace Home. She was born Winifred Ellen Kapraun on January 18, 1938, in Victoria, IL to Anton and Jessie Likes Kapraun. Sister entered the congregation on September 8, 1956, and was in the 51st year of religious profession. She served as a teacher at St. Joseph’s School, Pekin; St. Mary’s School, Henry; Sacred Heart School, Moline, where, as both director and teacher, she began a Learning Center for the primary students. After 24 years in Moline, Sister was assigned to the former St. Joseph Home of Peoria, caring for the elderly. Her next assignment was at St. Joseph Convent/Mother of Peace Home, where as Assistant Administrator/Administrator, she supervised the care of the retired and infirmed sisters of the congregation. In 1996, Sister began the congregation’s Adult Literacy Program at Immaculate Conception Convent, where she was both administrator and teacher. She did this until her death. Sister is survived by her Franciscan Sisters, cousins and friends. Visitation will be Monday, November 30, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Convent, 2408 West Heading Avenue, West Peoria, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. by Rev. Lawrence Zurek, OFM. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 10:00 a.m. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
