SISTER MARY ELLEN FLANNERY Sister Mary Ellen Flannery, 78, a member of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis died at 3:30 A.M., Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Motherhouse in East Peoria, IL. Sister was born on May 30, 1930 in La Salle, IL to Gerald and Anna Norman Flannery. Surviving is one brother, David Flannery. On Apr. 18, 1949, she entered the Convent at Mount Alverno Novitiate, Peoria IL. She received her RN from St. Francis School of Nursing, Peoria; M.S.N. in Psychology at Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; Certified C.L.S.A. at St. Xavier College, Chicago, IL; and M.A., Healthcare Administration at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. During her 59 yrs. in religious life, Sister Mary Ellen served as Supervisor of a Psychiatric Unit and Instructor of St. Francis School of Nursing for 3 yrs; Supervisor of the Mental Health Unit at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria for 4 yrs; Administrator of St. James Hospital in Pontiac from 1977-79. Sister served as a Council Member and our Governing Board for many yrs. She was Major Superior from Oct. 6, 1994-2006. Sister served as Chairperson and Board Director of OSF Healthcare System, Foundation and Health Plans Inc. and Secretary/Treasurer of St. Francis Inc. She also served on the Saint Francis Medical Center/College of Nursing, Peoria, IL; Saint Anthony College of Nursing, Rockford, IL & Illinois Neurological Institute, Peoria Boards. Visitation at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Motherhouse Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Motherhouse Burial will be in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery at the Motherhouse in East Peoria. Arrangements are by Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria.
