Obituary for Sister Mary Dolores Kirchgessner
WEST PEORIA – Sister Mary Dolores (Mildred Christina) Kirchgessner, 103, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception died on June 6, 2016, at Mother of Peace Home, West Peoria.
She was the daughter of Albert and Anna (Waldschmidt) Kirchgessner.
Sister Mary Dolores entered the congregation on Sept. 3, 1941, and was in her 72nd year of religious profession. Sister began her ministry in 1944. Through the years, Sister taught in several of the schools staffed by her congregation, Sacred Heart in Moline, St. Mary’s in Peru, Immaculate Conception in Spring Valley, and St. Philomena in Peoria. Her love of teaching and her students found Sister using many creative techniques to reach those in her charge.
Her many talents led Sister Mary Dolores to visiting with the homebound of St. Philomena Parish, bookkeeping at St. Joseph’s Home in Peoria, maintaining medical records for her congregation, and managing the dietary needs of her sisters at Immaculate Conception Motherhouse.
Sister Mary Dolores kept abreast of world news and was quite conversant on political issues. Science was a love of hers and she was the “go-to” person when scientific questions surfaced at the dinner table.
In addition to the Franciscan sisters with whom she shared her life, Sister Mary Dolores is survived by her sisters-in-law, Joan Kirchgessner, Patricia Kirchgessner, and Edytha Kirchgessner; brother-in-law, Dean Moushon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
A visitation will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Convent, 2408 W. Heading Ave., West Peoria, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7 p.m. Reverend Martin Mwongyera will be the celebrant. Burial will be on Saturday, June 11, 2016, in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Peoria.
Memorials may be made to the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception.
