Sister M. Judith Schmitz, 88, a member of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis died at 10:35P.M., Sunday, June 19, 2011, at the Motherhouse, East Peoria, IL. She was born on Dec. 24, 1922 in Dusseldorf, Germany, to Hubert Schmitz and Margarete Rohrig Schmitz. Surviving is one sister, Gertrud Meisen who lives in Germany. Sister entered the convent on Nov. 30, 1950 at Bad Pyrmont, Germany. She made her Final Vows on Nov. 19, 1959. During her 60 yrs. in Religious Life, she served in the Nursing Department at St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, IL; at St. Philip Hospital, Rock Hill, SC; at St. Mary Hospital, Marquette, MI. Sister worked as a Premature Center Supervisor and as an obstetrical nurse at St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. She also served as an obstetrical supervisor at St. James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac, IL. She worked as a Nursing Supervisor of our Motherhouse Infirmary, E. Peoria. Sister was appointed First Assistant Superior and later became Superior at the Motherhouse. She retired to the Motherhouse Infirmary in February 2004. Sister M. Judith had a true Franciscan Spirit for she loved nature and had a remarkable way with birds and animals. Visitation at 7 P.M. on Tuesday at the Motherhouse Funeral Service will be at 10 A.M., Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Motherhouse, E. Peoria, IL. Burial will be in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery at the Motherhouse. Arrangements are by Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria, IL.
