Obituary for Sister Joyce Dura

EAST PEORIA - Sister Joyce Dura, 71, a member of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, died at 4:25 A.M. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at Motherhouse, East Peoria. She was born on Oct. 1, 1942, in Chicago to Raymond and Jean (Pogorzeski) Dura. Surviving are two brothers, Kenneth Dura of California and Ronald Dura of New York; and one stepbrother, Richard Sears of Chicago. She entered the convent on Sept. 8, 1965, in East Peoria. During her 48 years in religious life, she served in the x-ray department at Saint James-John W Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac and St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, Ill., and as a nursing assistant at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria and at St. Joseph Medical Center. She worked as a social service assistant at St. Joseph Medical Center. Sister became a certified pastoral associate in health care. She served in the pastoral care department at St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg and, for many years, at Saint Francis Medical Center. She showed great compassion and brought comfort to countless patients and families. Sister Joyce stated, “to be a Christian is not easy, but the joys of sharing Christ with others in this world is very rewarding and a hundred fold more rewarding in the life to come.” Later on, because of her own personal health condition, she became a support person on the surgical floor in Peoria. On May 25, 2002, she joined the Sisters in the Motherhouse Infirmary in the Apostolate of Prayer and Suffering. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at the Motherhouse, East Peoria. Msgr. Rick Oberch will officiate. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, also at the Motherhouse. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery at the Motherhouse. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
