Obituary for Sister Cor Marie (Mary) Cielocha, SSND

Sister Cor Marie (Mary) Cielocha, SSND, 91, of Creve Coeur, IL. passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Sister was born January 27, 1930 to John and Martha (Glowinski) Cielocha in Chicago, IL. She was proceeded in death by her parents, three sisters, seven brothers and a sister-in-law. She is survived by Frank (Judith) Cielocha, many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Sister Cor Marie adopted three children: two of which are Theresa Anderson and Franklyn (Jamie) Lane of Creve Coeur and was guardian of Gerald (Amanda) Julius of Bloomington, also two step grandchildren Karlee and Taylor Wiesehan.

Sister entered The School Sister of Notre Dame on September 8, 1948 in Milwaukee, WI. She spent several years teaching at several schools in Milwaukee and Illinois. She continued her teacher training at Mount Mary University and then went to Cardinal Stritch College for her master’s degree as a reading specialist (both in Wisconsin).

Sister founded a Developmental Center for academic handicapped children, especially children with autism. She was selected to give a presentation on autism in Lucerne, Switzerland.

She was offered an opportunity to start a Child Development Program at Illinois Central College. She taught and supervised the Child Development Program for 14 years at the college. It was the first two-year program in Central, IL. This program served children from 24 months to five years old. She and her students were responsible for starting Illinois Day Care Center, Carver Center Comm. Day Care Center, Joan of Arc Summer Migrant Center, and many other daycares. She also assisted in promoting many organizations in Early Childhood and Reading.

Sister was elected President of the Illinois Reading Council. One of her greatest gifts she claimed was, “God gave me to children with limited abilities and severe learning problems.”
Many of her students (95%) went on to finish high school and about 25% from that group earned a Masters.

Sister had many talents and hobbies. Prayer was her most sought after skill. Along with that came music, reading, cooking, gardening and researching problems in Autism and reading.
Sister Cor Marie renewed her vows and received a blessing at a mass on April 25, 2021 at St.
Anthony Church, Bartonville to celebrate her 70th anniversary of Profession.

Sister Cor Marie Cielocha would have been satisfied to teach as a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 25 or even 40 years. Instead the Lord gave her 70 years and she couldn’t be happier.

“I’m grateful --- grateful to God that he let me teach the little children,” she said before renewing her vows at St. Anthony Church on April 25. “By being with them, you become one like them. The children are God’s great gift to us.”

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 7, 2021 at St. Anthony Catholic Church officiated by Father Charles Klamut and Father David Heinz. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM at the church. People coming to the funeral will be required to wear face coverings. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to School Sister of Notre Dame, Atlantic Midwest Province, 6401 N. Charles Street Baltimore, MD 21212, or St. Anthony Catholic Church 2525 S. Skyway Road Bartonville, IL 61607.
