Obituary for Shirley L. Coyle

Peoria- Shirley L. Coyle, age 91, went to heaven Wednesday, December 13, 2017, while at her home surrounded by the love of her family.

Shirley was born on January 9, 1926, in Peoria, IL, to Paul and Helen Marlow Spainhower, both of whom preceded her in death. She attended St. John Grade School and graduated from the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria.

Shirley married George H. Coyle Jr. on June 5, 1948, at St. John’s Catholic Church. George preceded her in death on April 26, 1994. Shirley was also preceded in death by three siblings and their spouses; sisters Patricia (and Donald) Mahrt, Gerry (and Kenneth) Heuerman and one brother, PJ (and Marilyn) Spainhower; one brother-in-law, Thomas Maushard; and nephew, Stephen Noel.

Shirley was blessed by her very special three surviving sisters and two brothers-in-law: Mary (Lee) Noel, Nancy Maushard, and Peggy (Vance) Belliston. Their love and care in her final months can never be repaid.

Surviving are Shirley’s five children and spouses: George (Julie) of Elburn, Il., Daniel (Kathy) of Lacon, Il., Michael (Wendy) of Peoria, Il., Patrick (Barb) of Washington, Il., and Kathleen (Doug) Cullett of Germantown Hills, Il., 17 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She was “Aunt Shirley” to numerous loving and caring nieces and nephews. She would be the first to tell you how blessed she was with the friends God had brought into her life.

Shirley entered the workforce out of high school as a phone operator with Illinois Bell Telephone. Once children came, she became a devoted stay-at-home mom. Through her children’s grade school and high school years, Shirley was an active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Parish for over 25 years, participating in Mother’s Club, BSA Troop 5, and the school’s hot lunch program. As her youngest children entered their teenage years, Shirley returned to the work force. She found her true calling as a teacher’s aide, working for 19 years with the special education students and faculty at Robert Jamieson School. She truly loved the friendships built there before retiring in 1988.

After she and George eventually moved from their East Bluff home, she became a member of and remained active in Holy Family Catholic Church for over 30 years, participating in daily Mass, regularly attending perpetual adoration, and singing in the Resurrection choir.

She was a proud member of the “Wine and Widows” club, getting together socially with her girlfriends every Friday. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, St. Francis Auxiliary, KC Women’s Auxiliary, and the St Patrick’s Society of Peoria.

Shirley was blessed with a bright smile, a great singing voice, a quick Irish wit, and a love for dance.

Her devotion to God and the Catholic faith and love for her family and her friends were at the center of her life. You couldn’t “out love” Shirley Coyle; “I Love You More, I Love You Forever” was her life’s refrain.

Visitation is to be held at Wright & Salmon Mortuary from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Monday, December 18, 2017 with recitation of the rosary at 3:00 PM. Franciscan Friars will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at Holy Family Church in Peoria at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, December 19, 2017, with a one hour prior visitation. Internment services will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum, Allen Road, Peoria, Il.

A Life Celebration Dinner will immediately follow at K of C Banquet Hall, Radnor Rd., Peoria.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley has requested any memorial donations to be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or St. Vincent DePaul Society at Holy Family Church.
