Obituary for Shirley E. Roehnelt-Johnson

Peoria- Shirley Elizabeth Weisser Roehnelt-Johnson passed away at 6:25 AM, Friday, September 29, 2017, surrounded by her loving family, at UnityPointe Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, IL.

Shirley was born July 8, 1927 in Forrest IL, to John Fredrick Weisser and Marcella Sampey Weisser. She married Owen G. Roehnelt in 1950 and Dr. Harold G. Johnson in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her husband Owen G. Roehnelt and her husband Dr. Harold G. Johnson, her brother Ronald Weisser and parents.

Shirley is survived by her three daughters: Lark (Pat) Sullivan, Robin Robins, Tobie (Jerome) McMahon, all of Peoria and one son Mark (Michele) Roehnelt, of Dunlap.

She is also survived by her five grandchildren; Stephanie (Michael) Crabtree of Edgewater, MD, Molly (Ciaron) Graham of Peoria, Sean (Maureen) Sullivan of Dunlap, Abbey (Andrew) Cook of Peoria and Lauryn Roehnelt of Dunlap; and 10 great grandchildren; Quinn and Sullivan Crabtree; Josie, Thomas, Patrick and Sean Graham; Lukas and Jailyn Sullivan and Owen and Colin Cook.

Shirley graduated from Woodruff High School and from Brown’s Business School. She worked for Illinois Bell, later owning businesses with her husband Owen: Around the Clock Laundromat, Wee-Wash-It Laundrette, Pink & Blue Diaper Service, and Hoffman Burial Supplies, Inc.

As an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church of Peoria for over 62 years, she belonged to many of the women’s groups, last participating in the Hospitality Circle. She also was the co-founder, volunteer manager and buyer for the Rena Kuster gift shop at The Lutheran Home, for over 35 years.

Shirley has also served as a Board Member of The Kickapoo Council of Girl Scouts, serving twice as the Tri-County Cookie Chair Woman. She was also an active member of Willow Knolls Country Club, AMVETS Post 64, and a member of Woodruff Alumni Association.

She loved spending time with her family, tennis, bridge, reading, traveling and Bible classes.

Funeral services at Trinity Lutheran Church of Peoria, officiated by Pastor Mark Nelson and Pastor Matt Synnott, will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 3, 2017 with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow the services at Trivoli Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Lutheran Hillside Village Foundation – Benevolent Fund.
