Obituary for Sharon Flynn Durkee

Sharon Flynn Durkee, age 69, of Peoria, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus, surrounded by her family, on Monday, February 7, 2022, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.

Her family will fondly remember the love she poured into her cooking, her long talks with her children, the enjoyment she found in buying the perfect gift and her endless affection and pride for her grandchildren. Lovingly nicknamed “Saint Sharon” by many, she was a kind and patient soul with a natural ability to make everyone feel they were the most important person in the room. She had the gift of recounting family memories, down to the tiniest detail and was proud to share these stories with anyone lucky enough to cross her path.

Sharon was born on June 15, 1952 in Joliet, IL. She met the love of her life, Thomas E. Durkee, on a blind date on Valentine’s Day in 1974. They married on May 31, 1975 at Corpus Christi Church in Galesburg. He survives.

Sharon leaves a legacy of love and faith to her children, Lisa (Josh) Barbee of Toulon, Monica (Matt) Lappie of Peoria, Marie (John) Achterberg of Peoria, Kevin (Meghan) Durkee of Carmel, IN, Laura (Dan) Pritchard of Washington, Brian Durkee of Peoria, and Philip (Kate) Durkee of San Diego, CA; and her grandchildren, Naomi Barbee of Toulon, Ryan Lappie of Peoria, Alex and Anna Achterberg of Peoria, Benjamin, Nathan, Elliot, and William Durkee of Carmel, IN, Morgan Coovert of Washington, Easton and Grayson Pritchard of Washington, and Evan Durkee of San Diego. She is also survived by her half-sister Barbara (Art) Sheridan of North Venice, FL; her soul sister and “partner-in-crime” Mary (Tim) Lawrence of Nashville, TN; brothers-in-law James Durkee of Goldsboro, MD and George (Adela) Durkee of Oakwood Hills, IL; and sister-in-law Joan Durkee of Kenosha, WI.

Sharon will be reunited in death with her parents, Eddie Jr. and Jeanetta (Preston) Flynn, her aunt Pauline Edwards and her grandson Jonah Kai Durkee.

Sharon graduated from Jacksonville High School and the Methodist School of Nursing, where she was awarded Student Nurse of the Year. As a registered nurse, she worked in Maternal/Baby Care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg and OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. Having a 27-week premature daughter required her to put a hold on her paid nursing career.

When she wasn’t needed to care for her own children, she found others to serve. She assisted at St. Bernard School in the cafeteria, kindergarten and preschool classrooms and concession stand. She co-chaired the barbecue lunch at the famous St. Bernard’s Christmas bazaars for several years and served as president of the Mother’s Club. With her husband, she was a presenter for the Peoria Diocese Pre-Cana marriage preparation program and also for the St. Bernard Baptism preparation program. Sharon was a Eucharistic minister at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. She attended Cursillo #173 and served as a team member. She was a receptionist at D/D Productions and later at her daughter’s studio, Miss Laura’s School of Dance. For 37 consecutive years, Sharon attended dance recitals in which at least one child performed, taught, or directed.

When she battled and defeated non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice, her trust in the Lord never wavered.

The family will forever be grateful for the love, care, and dignity given Sharon (and Tom) by the staffs of 4Surg, the 5th floor Intermediate Heart Unit, and Surgical ICU at OSF. Everyone did their work without complaining about COVID restrictions or staff shortages. Doctors Marcial and Bansil; nurses Maegan, Abby, and Emily from 5 Heart; Tyann and Lexie from ICU; and so many others that took a sincere interest in Sharon as a person while also caring for her for the 25 days before Jesus welcomed her into His Kingdom.

Visitation for Sharon will be on Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, with a visitation 30 minutes prior. Please follow all COVID restrictions. Fr. David Richardson will officiate and entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria. Mass will be live streamed at stphils.com, click on the YouTube icon.

Memorials may be made to Illinois CancerCare Foundation (www.illinoiscancercarefoundation.org), St. Philomena Parish or St. Bernard’s Church.
