Obituary for Samuel Porritt Jr

Samuel Porritt Jr., 94, formerly of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Lawrence, KS where he lived since 2007. He was born December 24, 1917, in Peoria, the son of Samuel and Margaret Dunn Porritt. Mr. Porritt attended St. Bernard’s grade school and Spalding high school. He lived in Peoria for many years and was active in business and the community. He served in a Machinist Apprenticeship program and was employed by Caterpillar Tractor Corporation for ten years, ultimately serving as the company’s General Foreman of Quality Control. From 1946 until 1986, he was the owner and President of Samuel Porritt & Co. in East Peoria, a preferred supplier to Caterpillar and other area manufacturers of heavy equipment. Mr. Porritt was named a Life Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. As a youth, Mr. Porritt was a skilled violinist and, at age 14, was the youngest member of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his life, he was an active boater and member of the Illinois Valley Yacht Club, including serving as its Commodore. Mr. Porritt was also a long-time member of the Creve Coeur Club, Mt. Hawley Country Club, the Elks and other civic organizations. He married Elnor J. Key on April 27, 1961 in Peoria. She preceded him in death on February 18, 1995 in Marco Island, FL where they retired and maintained a home. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Mary Gangloff of Eureka, one brother, Thomas of Peoria, life-long friend Josephine Crutcher of Peoria, and first wife, Bette of Peoria. Survivors include his son, Samuel III, and wife Leann of Lawrence, KS, and many dear nieces and nephews. No services are planned for Mr. Porritt. Cremation is planned. The family suggests memorials to the National Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org), St. Vincent de Paul School, Notre Dame High School or a charity of the donor’s choice.
