Obituary for Ruth E. Keyes

PEORIA- Ruth E. Keyes, 80, of Peoria went to the Lord peacefully in her sleep at 11:48 PM, Friday, November 25, 2011. She was surrounded by her loving family when she died at OSF Forest Park after a brief illness Mary Ruth Schafer was born September 27, 1931, the daughter of Avo (Maynor) and J. Louis Schafer in Peoria. She was raised by her beloved mother and step father, Charles Sebold. She graduated from St. Cecelia Grade School and Academy of Our Lady High School in Peoria. She married William J. Keyes on February 14, 1953 in Peoria. He passed away October 22, 2002 in Toulon, IL. Also preceding her in death are her parents, and her half-brother, John Schafer of Henry, IL. Ruth was previously employed by the First National Bank Trust Department, Bradley University, St. Francis Radiology, and Medquist Inc., working as a transcriptionist. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church for 39 years and St. Sharbel Church. She was involved in Cursillo, Al-Anon, Legion of Mary, Diocesean Council of Catholic Women, and loved living at St. Sharbel Village Apartments because the people were so warm and loving. She is survived by her nine children; Dan (Tara) Keyes of Edelstein, IL, Dave (Marilyn) Keyes of Franklin Lakes, NJ, Bill (Barb) Keyes of Lakeville, MN, Mike (Kathy) Keyes of Peoria, Lynne Keyes of Peoria Heights, Kevin Keyes of Peoria, Tim Keyes of Peoria, Mary (Don) Adams of Davenport, IA, and Chris Keyes of Peoria. She had 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren with one on the way. She liked to write letters and send clippings of articles and recipes to people she cared for. She was fond of genealogy, so much so she started a book on the story of the family ancestry. She prayed fervently and loved deeply. She loved to bake bread, give things away (especially rosaries), read and laugh out loud. She was a wise, frugal, funny, and faithful woman. She liked to be poor but she was very rich in mind and spirit. She had a special bond with all her grandchildren. Ruth will be greatly missed. A Mass of Resurrection to celebrate her life will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, December 3, 2011 at St. Sharbel Church. Fr. Bechara Awada will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM, Friday, December 2 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria with the recitation of the Rosary at 7:45 PM. Further visitation will be 30 minutes prior to Mass at church on Saturday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, West Peoria.
