Obituaries
Russell “Leroy” McKinnie, age 86, of East Peoria, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at his residence, surrounded by close family and Libby.
Leroy was born on December 4, 1934 in East Peoria, a son of Russell and Clara (Hawley) McKinnie.
Leroy is survived by one daughter, Michele (James) Johnson of Mackinaw, two grandchildren, Russell J. Johnson of Colorado and Haylee (Clint) Prather of Eureka, one great-grandchild, Roman Prather, his life partner, Elizabeth “Libby” Roffol of East Peoria and her children, Connie L. Roffol of Colchester and Shawn Roffol of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Gerald McKinnie, one sister, Arlene Moushon and one stepson, Chris Roffol.
Leroy graduated from Spalding High School in 1952. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Peoria. Over the years, he owned many restaurants and bars, the first being the Pow Wow Club. The last bar was Oliver’s Pub, which he named after his favorite racehorse “Oliver Hill.” He loved horseracing and owned several horses. He also loved fishing, football and the St. Louis Cardinals. He played softball at Proctor Center and sponsored softball and bowling teams. Leroy enjoyed vacationing in Florida and having fun in Las Vegas.
Visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:30 AM on Monday, November 8, 2021 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. A Recitation of the Rosary for Leroy will follow at 11:30 AM also at the mortuary. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Peoria or TAPS in Pekin, IL.
