Obituary for Ronald E. Ghidina

PEORIA-Ronald E. Ghidina, 70 of Peoria, passed away at 6:41 a.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2007 at his home. He was born on February 16, 1937 in Pekin, IL to Gene and Eileen Andersen Ghidina. He married Mary Ellen King on December 13, 1956 in Kahoka, Missouri. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in December. Ron is survived by Mary Ellen and their three children, Mike (Nancy) Ghidina of St. Louis, Missouri, Marcia Ghidina of Asheville, North Carolina and Doug Ghidina of Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as two granddaughters, Sarah and Ellen Ghidina of St. Louis, Missouri. He is also survived by his aunts, Alice (Ernie) Svendsen of Pekin and Mardell Lenox of Morton; his brother-in-law, Dick Goelzer of California; his nephew, Tom Goelzer of California and his niece, Kathryn Goelzer of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Joann Goelzer. Ron will be remembered for his golfing career, most notably his 1973 Illinois State Amateur Championship, seven Peoria Men’s City golf championships and two Peoria Senior Men’s City golf championships. He was honored by being inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Ron will be remembered as well for his more than 20-year involvement with the Peoria Cursillo movement, TEC and prison ministry. He was active in many other charity events. Through business, golf and other activities, Ron enjoyed many wonderful friendships. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 2nd at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights with Father Tom Henseler officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. There will be no visitation immediately before the Funeral Mass. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, Ron’s family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Peoria Park District (to support junior golf), the Peoria Cursillo-TEC Center or OSF Hospice.
