Obituary for Ronald Dwyer

Edwards- Ronald Francis Dwyer, age 77, of Edwards, died Thursday, December 24, 2020 surrounded by his family at home after an eight year battle with cancer.

Ron was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Kickapoo where he belonged to Bishop Rossati Council of the Knights of Columbus. As a result of his deep faith and dedication to Catholic Education he received, the PRO Ecclesia ET Pontific Medallion from the Diocese of Peoria in 2000, the Peoria Notre Dame Foundation award in 2004, and the Alumni of the Year Award in 2017.
Ron spent 21 years as a sports official in basketball, baseball and football. He is a member of the Peoria Sports Officials Hall of Fame. In his summers away from working in schools, he served the Peoria Park District as little league director at Keller, director of Proctor Center and Pool, and director of softball leagues in Peoria at the Peoria Stadium. Ron was a member of the Old Timers Sports Club and the Independent Sports Club of Peoria.

He was a member of the Bradley “B” Lettermen’s Club in football and baseball, and inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a high school athlete at Spalding Institute, and College Athlete at Bradley, a coach (Spalding Football 1967), (Spalding Basketball 1969 and 1970) (East Peoria Baseball 1973 & 1974) and an administrator. Ron worked in education for 46 years as a teacher/counselor, coach and Principal for: Spalding High School, Limestone High School, East Peoria High School, Notre Dame High School, Armstrong Oakview Grade School in East Peoria, Paul Bolin Grade School in East Peoria and Central Junior High School in East Peoria. His last job in education was principal of St. Mary’s Grade School in Kickapoo, IL. After his retirement from (23 years in public schools and 23 years in private schools), he served for 3 years as a bailiff for the Peoria County Court House.
From three sport athlete to Peoria Park District Official, teacher, coach, administrator and sports official, Ron did everything he could to serve others with honesty, faithfulness and passion always investing himself with 100% effort. But there was one thing he relished above all and that was being known as a good and faithful husband, father and grandfather.

Ron married Margaret MacDonald on July 24, 1965 in Peoria. She survives along with three children: Ronald (Stefanie) Dwyer, Ginny L. (Doug) Hanley and Rick D. Dwyer; seven grandchildren: Daniel, Matthew, Cooper, Benjamin, Madalyn, Tucker and Jack: one brother: Bernie (Pat) Dwyer and three sisters: Patricia Dwyer, Linda (Roger) Kilpatrick and Mary Hermann.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jack (Patricia) Dwyer.

A private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s in Kickapoo on Tuesday December 29, 2020 with a public burial at St. Patrick Cemetery at noon. Father Joseph Dondanville will officiate.

Memorials in Ronald’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church and School in Kickapoo or Peoria Notre Dame.
