Obituary for Roland Gene Harms II

Peoria-Roland Gene Harms II, a devoted husband and loving father passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at the age of 65.

Roland was born May 12 1956, in Peoria to Roland Gene Harms I and Norma June (Martin) Harms. He married the love of his life, Julie Schwab on August 8, 1981. They would be celebrating 40 wonderful years of marriage this August. She survives.

Also surviving are their two children Meaghan J. Harms and Roland Gene Harms III, one granddaughter, Maguire Jo Casey, and one sister, Patricia Harms, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Roland graduated from Manual High School and then attended Bradley University, where he graduated with honors in 1978. He worked at Kmart as a receiving manager for over 20 years and at Caterpillar in Morton for 14 years. He never missed a single day of work, until his diagnosis of colon cancer in 2011, which he fought and conquered. Roland was happily enjoying retired life and spending more time with his family.

Everyone who knew Roland, knew him as a sports enthusiast. There was nothing he loved more than watching games, whether it be the St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, UConn Women Huskies, Notre Dame football, Fighting Illini, or Bradley basketball, which he and Julie held season tickets for. He had an uncanny knack for numbers, facts, and statistics. He never forgot a date. Roland was the ultimate organizer and kept us all on track. When he wasn’t watching sports, he enjoyed watching Pardon the Interruption, Jeopardy, reading, exercising, playing solitaire, and adding to his baseball card collection. He was the ultimate movie buff and enjoyed watching movies with his wife Julie on the weekends. Roland was always willing to help others and lend a helping hand to anyone in need. You always knew you could depend on him, no matter what. He was a man of his word. He was his own brilliant person and filled our home with his crazy sense of humor and goofy personality. He could make us laugh even on our worst day. He was so loved by so many and will be missed immensely. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend who left this world too soon and will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with a scripture service at 7:00 PM with Father David Richardson officiating. Graveside service and burial will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
