Obituary for Robert Wayne Washburn

PEORIA-Robert Wayne Washburn, 83, of Peoria, died at 3:50 p.m. on September 21, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Robert (Bob), a son of Roy and Ethel Green Washburn, was born on June 26, 1926 in Tremont, IL. After high school, he served in the US Navy for a short time, followed by his enlistment in the Marine Corps., during which time he saw duty in the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he worked as a prison guard at Statesville Prison in Joliet, IL. He was a police officer with the City of Peoria Police Department, retiring in 1981 on disability. He belonged to the American Legion Post 2 and to the Illinois Police Association. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Illinois. Bob loved spending time with his family, fishing, working in the yard and caring for his elderly neighbors when he was able. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, three sons: Roland (Charlotte) Washburn of Ozark, MO, Robin Washburn (Sharon Matusiak) of Marion, IL, and James Sr. (Linda) Washburn of Washington, IL; four grandchildren: James Washburn Jr., Sarah Porter and Robert Washburn all of Washington, IL; and Mary Matusiak of Washington State; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Wayne Washburn, five sisters and five brothers. The family is grateful for the wonderful care Bob received at the Route 9 Cancer Center and to Dr. Le-Lindqwister and her staff. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009 at St. Thomas Church with Msgr. William Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary and 1 hour before the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Building Fund or to the Cancer Center on Route 91. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
