Obituary for Robert R. Wendle
PEORIA – Robert R. Wendle, 91, of Peoria passed away at 3:04 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Lutheran Hillside Village.
Robert was born on Oct. 23, 1924, in Alton, Ill., to the late Lawrence and Bertha (Struiff) Wendle. He married Lois Smith on May 15, 1948, in Alton. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2015.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Nyla) Wendle of Peoria, William (Margaret) Wendle of Peoria, Mary (Bill) Hurd of Bloomington, Robert D. Wendle of Metamora, Jane Wendle of Peoria, and Patti (Lee) Banks of Cincinnati, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was a World War II Army veteran and retired as an engineering manager for Ameritech in 1986 after 39 years of service.
He joined the Optimist Club and began volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club soon after moving to Peoria in 1965 and stayed active with both organizations until his late 80’s.
A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Father Dustin Schultz will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass at the church. At his request, his body has been donated to science.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Peoria, Inc.
